Jean Seberg's famous interview of Jean-Pierre Melville from the film Breathless by Jean-Luc Godard is one that still rings true to this day... Whether it's the comparison of American women to French women or the thoughts on love and eroticism, Jean-Pierre Melville's philosophy still holds true to this day. The most famous line from this interview and perhaps one of the best from the film is when Seberg asks what Melville's "greatest ambition in life is"... Melville simply replies, "devenir immortel et puis mourir": To become immortal, and then die.... This is an eternal statement and the meaning can not be more clear: Live your life as if your actions will be forever remembered, and once you've accomplished that, then you can die knowing you've made a difference.

I wrote this preface 4 years ago apparently for a short story of the same name... My close friend Greg Mike sent it to me recently and I thought it was pretty amusing so I decided to share it... In the dialogue below I was obviously making fun of what is Manhattan's Meat Packing District... Calling it the Lower West Side... It's also a short spin on the gentrified grunge Disney Land known as the Lower East Side... New York is a city of ever shifting faces and energy... Movements and currents... Things always change and people still want to hang on to the way things were... I guess I was poking fun of the social mores of our current era even 4 years ago… Enjoy!

The Substantial Incentive

Visually stimulating and ultimately coincidental the real question is can he make the crucial flip. By flip I mean the change in his actions, his whole being in a sense. You see Camden, his mother named him that after she visited New Jersey one year back in 76’, as odd as can be she was enthused by this word, was to be the head of the worlds’ largest gossip editorial ever. And editorial it was, this magazine was published in over 210 different countries, positioned here though in the good old U-S of A, as great as U.S. gossip was. Or was not, I do believe some of the gossip coming out the U. K. at the time was extremely intense and how can I say, it captured what the public wanted… intriguing Filth and lots of beautiful people doing lots of naughty things.

So Camden runs this big editorial and who am I you might ask? Well I’m the filthy scum that he writes about… rude, brash, young, sexy, alluring, any old adjective that describes what the normal public suburban audience is lacking…. But overall to them a handsome looking arrogant asshole. Or at least that’s what the New York Times called me, thanks to good old Camden’s 4 page spread of me doing, unfitting for the public’s eyes during those times, at the city’s posh yet ruggedly urban sort of chic dive in the Lower West side, the meat packing district to be exact, called Trash Bar. Sounds kind of sleazy right, the place was an old trash dump turned into an all out socialite’s bordello of some sort, and that’s not all, this place was an exclusive type of dive for the city. No one but the cities, and the world’s, most vivid and allusive socialites, rock-stars and polyartista’s knew of the place. And of the one’s who did only a select few could walk amongst the star studded wooden floor planks and dirt ridden silver and golden sheer moldings and nails. Quite different I would say, I mean think about it your self, golden sheer moldings and nails with a wooden floor, who in the hell would want to think of that let alone socialize on that kind of raw flooring. But raw flooring aside, everyone came to enjoy the mood and socially euphoric and all transforming atmosphere of this place.

I'll be contributing to the blog as well as doing various write ups for Vogue Success Stories and more... The coolest aspect is that I get to contribute to the spotlight of fresh new talented designers from around the world... Not only scouring high and low design talent but also seeking out new and creative retail shops and initiatives... This September fashion week issue I will be submitting designers for Vogue talents with contributions in the magazine. Aside from what appeared to be a spring block party in Soho last night there was something to be announced, seen, and celebrated, Ryan McGinley’s debut of “Everyone Knows This is Nowhere.” McGinley’s photo’s and subjects were not presented in the active outdoors; or within a landscape that could conjure up memories or relatable places – instead, the figures were suspended in an eternal artifice, a strategic nowhere, so that the viewers attention would rest solely on the sitters’ state of mind. In this way the portraits were able to reflect back onto the viewer, becoming surrogates for emotional possibility. There is joy as well as uncertainty in these intimate photographs, and our access to the subjects and their interaction with the photographer at times seem limitless. What is interesting is that Ryan’s new series and subjects were very “rock n’ roll”, very “androgynous”, and very “youthful”… Don’t think for once that a photographer and artist of this multitude doesn’t affect everything around tapping into so much that we see today in fashion and art and culture… The way I see these images is the same way I see many editorial spreads of now… The same way I see models depicted and being used and the same spirit of androgyny is seen as well… Definitely take some time and go to the Team Gallery on 83 Grand St. in Soho and take a peak.

Siki Im is definitely one to watch... His first collection was based off of the kids from "Lord of the Flies" and the second collection was based off of "American Psycho"... Yet in the sense that the kids from "Lord of the Flies" grew up and were on Wall St. circa "American Psycho"... Not only creative and thought provoking, the collection kills it with the details and the fabrics... Siki himself is as humble as can be... Something to really love about a young designer, he speaks softly and lets the garments do the talking for him. He didn't win this past season's Ecco Domani award for no apparent reason... Definitely looking for big things to come from Siki and stay tuned to Vogue Talents for his work in the rotation here in the near future.

Their signature pant titled the "kax" is a cross between khakis and jeans which in turn are meant to create the perfect khaki pant. Hopefully we’ll see more kilts like this one seen here being worn by Pelayo this season… One can only think of the memory of Alexander McQueen at the moment… While I like to associate some breathe of cool within it to a personal favorite: Trainspotting. This look will be shunned by most and is only for the brave at heart… No pun intended. Reminds me of the 90’s punk, grunge aesthetic due to the fabrics and in some ways it brings Daniel Day Lewis to mind… Of course it will be seen more and more on the street and the runway and when the subject of absurdity or functionality are brought up one might think of the bad asses who kicked heads in for turf and honor ages ago weathering one. Hence the kilt and look to me are one of heritage and rebellion… Feeling the rebel spirit more and more these days…

Luca Rubinacci seen here, isn't just a supremely styled man but he's also the son of one Italy's best tailors. The pops of color and the classic patterns seen here with the jewelry that add a young almost bohemian touch to this look are on point... Notice the slight pop of Luca's argyle socks and how they stand out against the other colorways that work seamlessly in unison... That's one of the best things that Italian men do so well... The subtle small details that pop so well. From the pocket square to the hat... This look is flawless and one of the things that I love about Italian style... Not too stuffy... It's fun and unique to the individual when done right.

HB Wellington's first single release and video were leaked on to YouTube recently... The man responsible for "The Wellington Papers" as well as a founding member of the Heart Brake Crew and many other exploits near and far... Take a peak as you'll notice some all too familiar faces seen out and about in Manhattan's downtown nightlife from time to time.... "Berlin" is Wellington's first single and is definitely one to foreshadow many more to come here in the near future. Iconic American: The Arrow Collar Man

The Arrow Collar Man was an advertising icon and creation of Saturday Evening Post commercial illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. Commissioned in 1905 by Cluett, Peabody & Company under its Arrow Collar brand out of Troy , New York, Leyendecker was already famous for his commercial illustrations. From 1905 to 1930 the Arrow Collar Man was a square jawed paragon of the Anglo-Saxon American man that new American's and current one's strived to be like and who women of the era adored. This advertising icon inspired everything from broadway musicals and daily fan mail to $32 million in collar and shirt sales by 1918 which at the time was unheard of. It's estimated that around 4 million shirts were manufactured weekly by 1920. Nowadays over 100 years after the Arrow Man's conceit the majority of men do not use detachable collars... The Arrow Man simply faded out and the style waned by 1930 with a vast change not only in American spending but in attire altogether. As the Great Depression hit more and more men were turning in their detachable collars for a less formal look, ready to work the fields and mills, and so was the dawn of a new era of clothing of a simpler more functional aesthetic. I think it's still good to remember this icon and to keep marketing and advertising figures like this in our minds in regards to the history of menswear... As things cycle and old becomes new it's always great to take a look back at our history... The Arrow Man without a doubt always reminds me of an F.Scott Fitzgerald novel, the Jazz Age and the roaring 20's.

Modern Classics: Sid Mashburn

Not to regurgitate as there is so much of it out there these days... However, when it's Sid Mashburn I just have to throw it down. Sid's style of American classics and mid-twentieth century prep mixed with Italian aesthetics ie... Natural shoulders, cropped jeans, higher arm holes and fitted shirting, the capped double monkstraps (English in origin), the quirk of the tie. It's like Gianni Agnelli hooked up with the students pictured in Take Ivy and had a kid and he's come of age in our era... This to me is the modern tailored look that I love so much and my main aesthetic for the most part... It's classy while young and hip, it's functional and not really flashy... The style is in the subtle details... It's in the fits and the smaller parts to make up the overall look. Adding your own twist to this is what can make the look pretty amazing and work for the majority of people... While most of you have come across a post or two on Sid I thought I would push this back out there and post the GQ video Sid did with Adam Rapoport a while back as well as the photo's of Sid and his staff... Along with Designer's like Michael Bastian, Sid is carving the way and adding to the evolution of men's tailoring in America with his own unique twist. If you're ever in Atlanta take a trip to Sid's store at least for a peak and if you don't get a chance take a look at his website... It's as witty and charming as Sid himself: Sid Mashburn.

Fall Essential: The J.Crew Wool Turtleneck

I've been looking for some time now for the right turtleneck for this coming fall... Always classic and in style the turtleneck can add a bit of sophistication to just about any look... Something about a corduroy blazer and a turtleneck underneath bring to mind thoughts of sitting next to a warm fireplace, reading a good book, and puffing a nice cherry-vanilla flavored tobacco in a vintage pipe.

Anyways, the other day the style maven himself Jake Davis gave the turtleneck a blessing with some quintessential photos of the always timeless Steve McQueen via the film Bullit with none other than a turtleneck on throughout much of that film for his character's signature look. The turtleneck he recommended was from a great brand called S.N.S. Herning. Recently I was on J.Crew and found a wool/alpaca turtleneck in a nice grey dongeal at a fraction of the S.N.S. Herning cost... So I felt compelled to write this post... For those of you searching for a great wool turtleneck this fall at an unbeatably competitive price point... Look no further than J.Crew. Always a classic goodie for American basics.

While i'm on the subject here of the turtleneck... This item with it's wool blend is very northen European in ancestry and can be a great addition to any clothing collection, just ask Hemingway... The J.Crew sweater is actually more similar to the wool sweater's worn by European and American longshoremen in the 1800's. Given that, I can't help but think of an always timeless cashmere turtleneck as well. Possibly paired with a doublebreasted blazer or a well patterned single breasted one for a more tailored look to create a chic and cultured appearance. I'm thinking very flamboyant and mid to late 60's and 1970's here. A look that brings to mind excessive and stylish playboy's of that era. This no doubt can already be seen in Tom Ford's fall '09 collection as seen below... I guess it all depends if you're feeling rugged or if you're in the mood to be a bit more of a dandy... Oh well... I'm guessing that the excessively chic dandy look will have to be saved until post recession as it can be altogether too flashy for today's standards.. That is unless you have the means to walk right into Tom Ford's shop uptown and purchase whatever you like at this very moment.

Read these books and get a feel for the dissillusioned culture of NY and LA's party scene and even Wall Street's greed in a time of big egos, big hair, big spending and just about big anything... Almost sounds familiar to our own pre-recession times... Living in excess. It's no wonder punk went mainstream and Seattle grunge took over after this era... Take some time to read these novels as no library is complete without them.

Tonight I’m very excited to see what’s in store from the much anticipated collection. WWD released some images as seen above which was just a little taste… Among the many heralded revival collections this has to be the one that most have ever really wanted to see. Literary Cool: Albert Camus

He just made existentialist writing look that much cooler... Even if he denounced that he was labeled an existential writer, his literary works had a great deal of existential themes from the absurd to French thinking and philosophies of his era. Anytime I see a photo of the man you can't take away that he had a great sartorial flair... Well dressed in a suit and many times accompanied by a trench, always smoking a cigarette... A reflection and precursor of the French New Wave movement or someone who definitely shed some light and inspiration and ideas on to the film movement along with the other obvious forbearer; Italian neorealism... He can possibly be sighted for some looks too as some of Jean-Paul Belmondo's style can look relatable to Albert Camus in many scenes.

Just A Few Fall Favorites...

The fair isle picks up more steam this season and looks great in editorials such as the one shown above via Details... Plaid on plaid is still going strong and looking better than ever. More on the fair isle and knits that will be big this fall can be seen on a post I did this past April here. These are a couple of my Fall favorites and will be a staple in the rotation this season.

The Italian sartorial quirk... They do it like none other with a cool that is almost straight out of a Fellini film... Called "sprezzatura" and used over and over... It still can not be beat. Great individual style thrown into bespoke classics passed down from generations of tailoring. I'm happy more people are finally catching on to the timeless aesthetics these days... The style is something not just for this Fall but for any season to be added to one's own regiment... Thanks to people like Scott Schuman and blogs like 13th & Wolf the recognition is being seen more and more.

Umit Benan's Fall collection for this season... Layered and modern... Clean and rugged... Dressy and casual... Umit's collection was just one that really grabbed me. Even if you don't have the full collection you can take aspects of the styled looks and incorporate them into your Fall wardrobe for this season... Then again it is a matter of personal taste.

I'm loving Dongal Tweed as a fabric for this Fall... I've already had a few vintage blazers that were good finds tailored and ready to go for the season... Something about the exposed slubs on the tweed just add a great look to a blazer or any other item this season... Sort of rugged yet refined and reminiscinet of the countryside in an old world sort of way.

The mustache... Seen everywhere from Hamish Bowles to our fellow blog impresario Max over at All Plaid Out , of whom I give a lot of credit to in this area (just search for his Fall Look)... Maybe try one on this fall... Of note this will not work on just anyone to be pulled off well.

Double Breasted suits in wool and with stand out patterns of tartan or glen plaid or classics in solid navy or gray... Just look at the style and power with a smile here of Matteo who you might recognize from Valentino's recent documentary, The Last Emperor... photo via the Sartorialist. I suggest for a cool quirk maybe try on some classic fall workwear boots... This won't work for everyone but can look very well worn and rugged... The mixing of style done right can work well when done in the proper fashion and with confidence.

Brooks goes to the beach... Palm Beach!

Brooks Brothers S/S10 collection... Channeling the American classics of a Spring in Palm Beach or perhaps Nantucket, the Hamptons or any other traditional WASP American enclave. From the washed out khaki's to the linens... The palm trees and the seahorses, pastel pallettes, the aqua seafoam and pink pantones. I almost feel like were taking the golf cart to Lily Pulitzer's place for a fete on the beach. Okay not that bright, floral or Palm Beach but you get the drift. All in all this collection looks very wearable and I'm sure many traditionalists out there will be swarming Brooks come next Spring... It's nice to see Brooks branching out more and more... Props to Claudio Del Vecchio!

Michael Bastian has teamed up with Stubbs & Wootton... Nice to see one of my favorite American designers doing a collaboration with a classic brand like Stubbs... Just read my post on my history with Stubbs... Probably why I'm so keen on the two joining forces on an "Old World" slipper.

Also noted is Commonwealth Utilities who teamed up with Stubbs for this season's show in NY... For those able to see that collection debut as well in Las Vegas at ENK Vegas they know that Anthony Keegan's latest and greatest is picking up steam in the realm of menswear... The Cranberries - Linger

Always a classic... Who didn't love Dolores O'Riordan, the hair, the tough Irish wit and charm... The theme and way this video was shot still gets me. The Cranberries are definitely up there on my list of great bands from the 90's. Also notable is the band's style on the album cover for "No Need To Argue", could very well hold true as a great style still today... Slim suits and Doc Martens... Sort of punk meets Ska meets New Wave meets 1990's... Reminds me of a cleaner Trainspotting... Which brings me to the subject of that whole very English/Scotch/Irish style which drew from a plethora of different influences from the Specials, to Skinheads and the Working Class... It all melds so well and into a great style. Take a peak... Both will always be classics: Trainspotting.

Stubbs & Wootton... I Reminisce...

Growing up as a kid in Palm Beach, Florida I only ever had one job before I abruptly said screw it and joined the Marines in sought of adventure and a lot more life changing experiences. That job was working for Percy Steinhart at the venerable Worth Ave. location of Stubbs & Wootton in Palm Beach. I had no clue about the footwear game or much of fashion in those days when my high school girlfriend at the time had her friend hook me up with the job but it was a job I would never forget.

Going to the shop each day selling waspy shoes to rich men's wives and socialites was not the worst job in the world at all... Along the way I got to know Percy a bit more as well as his love for art... I was a painter and an avid musician back then and Percy and I would always discuss artists and paintings and which art school I should attend... He collected fine Cuban art which hung around his offices and homes. The best thing I can remember is doing a painting with my best friend as a collaboration around the time, Mr. Greg Mike... I was a senior in high school and the annual holiday gift exchange had come about and I had none other than by chance been picked as Percy's "secret Santa"... So what did I give Mr. Steinhart? I gave him the collaboration painting of course... I guess you could say being young I doubted my artistic abilities... When he received the painting he liked it so much that he framed it and hung it up in his Palm Beach office where it hangs today... That's what I think of to this day when I think of Subbs & Wootton oddly enough, rather than the image of timely well crafted English style footwear...

So today when I read in the Moment that Stubbs had re-opened a store on Madison Ave. here in New York I was delighted and often reminded of my youth as one can be. Be sure to check out the new store on Madison Ave. if you're looking for some official footwear, of the WASP kind of course...

Fall Look I: Rough Rugged and Worn

Rather than show my picks or tell what's what this fall, I'd rather explain my fall looks and picks through images to create overall moods and influences. I could talk why each look is relevant or why I'm feeling it but I won't. Instead I'll let the reader decide if it fits into their own mold this fall... The next series of posts will be different fall themes that I'm feeling from my own personal sense of style. Feel free to critique or judge but each look has a number of variable reasons on why they were chosen.

This first look doesn't need much explaining. It's pretty self-explanatory... The man who's in touch with nature and the heritage of the outdoors from numerous eras, told from brands old and new in aesthetic and age, rugged and raw... Hope you all enjoy!

The Temper Trap: Sweet Disposition

There was something about hearing this track from The Temper Trap while in a scene from 500 Days of Summer that really put me in a nostalgic mood recently while watching the film. The song almost made me want to leave everything I was doing and take a train ride from San Diego to Seattle or go camping at Yellowstone and back pack Europe, perhaps sail the eastern seaboard... Not many songs do that to me. Check this band out if you haven't already heard of them... They have a great range and stand out from a lot of the monotony of what is heard out there these days.
